Accelerated Reader

posted Aug 18, 2010 10:34 AM by Amber Hodge   [ updated Aug 7, 2011 5:40 PM ]

Last year, fourth grade had a very successful AR year, leading all others in points and # of books read.  I hope to keep up that record this year! Students may take tests on any book they complete from home or in school.  If a book is not in the AR system I still encourage them to read, and I will manually give them a quiz and enter the correct number of points.  Please encourage your child to read during his/her free time at home or as a way of winding down before bed by sharing a book together, even big kids like to be read to!

In about 2-3 weeks I will begin inputting goals into the Accelerated Reader system for each child. Each student will take the "STAR" test, which is a comprehension/vocab test on the computer to determine his/her independent reading level. The goals will be individualized so that a student reading on a third grade level will not require as many points as a child reading on a sixth grade level.  Each goal will be set with the input of the student with a little push from me to make them challenge themselves.  These goals will be only between me, that child, and his/her parents.

Also, as a small "incentive" toward reading as the class reaches its class goal (right now it's 100 points) we will have a mini-party of the class' choosing (popcorn, short movie, ice cream, etc.).

Happy Reading!

School Supplies

It's back to school time, which means new school supplies!  I always loved the smell of new crayons and pencils, even if it did mean the start of *gasp* school.  It would be very helpful if we could have all supplies in by Wednesday, August 17th in order to maximize teaching time.  However, I understand if not all supplies are able to be in by that day.  Also, if there is anything you are unsure about on the supply list feel free to ask me at school or shoot me an e-mail.
